I'm trying my hand at Fraktur, a calligraphic script which can be traced to Maximilian I of Austria, a Holy Roman Emperor. Maximilian I (who reigned from 1486-1519) had a new typeface created for a series of books he established. This is the first Fraktur typeface.

History Lesson:
The Latin words, "Bella gerant alii, tu felix Austria nube" is a part of the famous saying of the House of Austria (Habsburg). The translation is "Let others wage war, but thou, O happy Austria, marry". This saying came from Maximilian's actions: he had decided that the best thing to do to avoid war was to marry off his children and grandchildren into the ruling families of Europe, thus expanding the influence of the House of Austria. All the other countries wanted to expand their influence as well, but they did this by going to war. Only a century after Maximilian's death, the House of Austria ended up ruling a *very* long list of countries. Oh, the power of marriage...

The equivalent in Italian would be a funny expression, I could make a joke out of it. "Che ora è? Le undici meno tre quarti".

At 1:02 the guy with the blue-squares shirt gets really lucky that he is not arrested and beaten, too. Also, he does help the situation of those on the ground. That's the person I'd like to have on my side when everyone is ganging up on me. Unfortunately it's very rare, and the case is usually the opposite, that even more people will try to beat you up.

I have a buddy from Germany who says that in Germany, people are taught that Charlemagne was something like a "founding father" of Germany. When most Americans and British people hear this, their first reaction is to laugh and say that Charlemagne was French--and this idea makes my German buddy pretty angry. So I started doing a bit of research into the question, and the more I read the more complicated the answer became. To sum up my impressions (and grossly oversimplify): the nation of France evolved out of the part of parts of western/central Europe that were heavily under Roman influence, and the nation of Germany evolved out of the parts that were not. Charlemagne himself deliberately toed the line between these two groups, and the Frankish people as a whole were split between the two sides.
So, based on what we can know of the development of French and German national identity, do you think Charlemagne's own identity was more on one side or the other, or exactly in the middle (i.e. in Belgium)?

So, he was German and not French.
