What are the first things the children know to draw?
Other people. Yeah, they do it pretty bad, but they draw people.
They draw animals.
Houses.
Cars.
Clouds.
The sun.
The moon.
The stars...
Are we getting there?
And amongst the very first things they draw, one is the HORIZON.
A FLAT HORIZON.
The horizon is the only thing it is not an object. The rest of things fall into the category of objects, more or less solid, but objects afterall. They have a shape, they have colours, details, etc... The horizon is actually a concept. It is not a thing per se. The horizon is nothing but a concept. The horizon is just where the ground and the sky merge and disappear of our sight.
Children have no problem in understanding this very concept without explanation. The kid already understands the earth is flat. It is maybe one of the first things the kid understands in a subconcious way.
Then the schooling system hacks the perception of reality and the kid now "knows" the earth is a ball.

Great point. Walking in from our car one night recently during a full moon, my 2 year old son points at it and says, "Dad, look at that sun," which I first thought was merely cute -- now I see it for what it is.

nyse,
Welcome to the forum. How did your awakening to cosmology come about?
