Curious indeed. My 1940 French-English dictionary does list second as a French word. I also looked up the French word stopper on that site. It seems to suggest that stopper comes from the English, although I have my doubts. It could be much more ancient than that.

Well, if you're into these searches, I can give you some more interesting links and sources, although I am not going to delve into them myself, because this could be endless and even for just one word. I might summarize that the word existed even in Latin and Greek, but they, too, might have gotten it from somewhere else. It's hard however to argue that it is an English word, as most today would think. So maybe that French site we both used... kind of sucks, unless they just refer to the latest origin. This one says Latin: etimo.it/?cmd=id&id=17537&md=5a385f83b4f91b34f119f4e23e4e1025This one says Latin and Greek: dictionary.reference.com/browse/stop?s=tThis one says Latin: www.duden.de/rechtschreibung/stopfen

Unmissable interview with Alain Delon, who's training, in 1959, for his role in Rocco and His Brothers (1960): Alain Delon - Interview (1959)Curtis Hayden At minute 4:27 he mentions his role model, Jean Marais, who is his example of an actor who did not go on a power trip. Here's an interview from Jean Marais, in the same year, where he actually talks exactly about being modest: Jean Marais raconte son métier d'acteur | Archive INA Ina StarsIn a way, these actors who are admirable for being so modest are also tiring and a bit boring by how modest and normal they are. It is almost as if I were listening to some unknown actor by how modest they both are.

Here's another one: Interview Alain Delon tournage Mélodie en sous Sol 1963 roxanabrau He's very clear and interesting. He is strikingly intelligent. Here's his first movie: Quand la femme s'en mele 1957deloncinema In practically every movie he stars in, there is no happy ending for the character he plays. He is practically the exact opposite of someone like Tom Cruise, who always wins. He talks about it here: Alain Delon : «Je suis mort dans presque tous mes films» - lefigaro.fr
