It is psychological, and I will explain why. First, look at this meme.
Who supports the Flat Earth theory? Evangelicals, who believe that nothing divine can be accepted beside the male Jesus Christ. They reduced Mary to the female who had born the savior, and the "Holy Virgin and Mother" was denounced as demonic Jezebel, as egyptian Isis, as "whore of Babylon". The consequence of this point of view was that the female divine was banished from culture, the "holy" (male) mind got superior over the "demonic" (female) nature, and every respect for the creation, like concerns about global warming or industrial pollution, got denounced as paganism, superstition and hostile to unlimited technical optimism. Now, while a round earth is still a reminder for the mythological mother Gaia and to stay with our feet on the ground, a Flat Earth is reduced to a genderless neuter, a depersonalized cosmic object, that can be exploited for big profit with oil, gas and other natural resources without any hesitation. Therefore the concept of Flat Earth is a support of the Evangelical and Western desacralization of our world for profit. Till self-destruction. Because for Evangelicals the divine is not material. When they say "the Word became flesh" it's for them just a phrase.
Conclusion: Flat Earth as a fantasy of Terry Pratchett is fun. But Flat Earth as a modern world view is just another Trojan horse to spread satanic ideology.
